Casey relishing Fed Cup call-up

Returning to tennis after a month-long training block, Casey Dellacqua said it was great to be back practising and playing in the team environment of Fed Cup.

The world No.106 joins Sam Stosur, Jarmila Gajdosova and Olivia Rogowska as part of the Australian team that takes on Germany this weekend in the Fed Cup World Group Play-offs, and said she was looking forward to the experience.

“I think everyone’s really excited to be here. This is a really crucial tie for us – Sam’s looking good and obviously played some tennis already on the green clay, and obviously plays great tennis on the clay, so I’m sure it’s not going to take her long to adapt, and it’s great to have Olivia making her debut. I’ve spent a lot of time with Olivia so it’s nice to have her in the team,” she said.

“I love these (Fed Cup) weeks, they’re probably the most fun weeks during the year, so it’s exciting to be here.”

Dellacqua arrives in Stuttgart for the first time in her career, continuing her successful return from shoulder and foot injuries which plagued her 2009 and 2010 seasons.

In 2011, Dellacqua enjoyed great results on the Pro Tour to return to the top 200 before turning her attention to the WTA Tour this year – she has contested qualifying at several tournaments and was successful at her last event in Indian Wells, taking her ranking to just outside the top 100.

The Western Australian has proven to be comfortable on clay – the same surface as this weekend’s tie – with her run to the third round at Roland Garros in 2008 as well as capturing the French Open mixed doubles title with Scott Lipski last year.

“I’ve never been here (Stuttgart) before, so it’s good to come somewhere different … the clay courts are playing really nice,” she said.

“I’ve just come out of a four-week training block so I feel pretty good and ready to get stuck into some matches … this is another good week for me to get some really good practices. I feel good and the body’s good, so yeah, no complaints.”
